Coinbase has hired a new vice president of business and data to replace Emilie Choi, who was elevated to operations director earlier this year.
The San Francisco-based cryptocurrency exchange picked up Dan Yoo, former director of operations at Nerdwallet personal finance site and previously vice president of business operations and analysis at LinkedIn, where he worked with Choi.
At Coinbase, Yoo will oversee business operations, business development, corporate development and the data team.
“Coinbase is a very data-based company,” Yoo said. “As part of this role, I will make sure that Coinbase internally and externally and its customers have the data they need to make better decisions.”
Yoo has been “peripherally following” the crypto industry with a Coinbase account since 2013, he told CoinDesk.
“I would not consider myself an expert in cryptography in any way,” he said. “However, I have been in and around financial services throughout my career.”
Yoo founded a number of new companies before working for LinkedIn, including ReliaQuote, one of the first online term life insurance brokerage firms that acquired the banking technology provider Fiserv in 2003.
In his new position, Yoo plans to help join Coinbase operations.
“On Linkedin, I was in a similar team and we helped to be the connective tissue of the organization,” he said. “With hyper growth in Coinbase, I hope to use my experience of scaling teams and getting them to work together effectively.”
